Chinese Mystery Snails – what you need to know and how to report

  1. They are an invasive species that is spreading through Haliburton County Lakes
  2. They are harmful to our lakes and have a number of negative effects
    a. Taking food away from our fish
    b. May lead to increased algal blooms
    c. Affect recreation such as swimming
  3. They reproduce rapidly – one female can produce 27-33 young per year
  4. Typical distribution is 16 per 1 square metre
  5. Highest distribution is soft, mucky or silty soil
    a. In both shallow and deep water

    i. be prepared with location including address and latitude and longitude
    ii. also have your photos ready
