Financial Report
The Auditors Report indicated that all records were
accurately done and that all was in good order.
The Treasurer reported a current balance of
$3590.80 along with our two GIC’s totaling $10,000.00.
All bills to date have been paid.
Haliburton Highlands Health Services
Foundation
Lake cottager Ian Fraser addressed the members and outlined
the current status of fundraising for the hospital. He urged members to donate
individually if they were able. It was noted that the Association has been
generous in the past.
Membership
Current membership is down somewhat from last year. Last
year’s friendly reminder was beneficial but it was decided that this kind of
action wasn’t necessary this time. The executive will try to include a
reminder in the fall newsletters of those members who have not paid their year
2000 dues.
Swimming
A record number of children (69) took swimming lessons this
year. The instructors did a great job and are looking forward to working with us
again next year. Once again the swimming lessons more than pay for themselves.
Sailing
The sailing regatta went well with more participants this
year. We will once again try to have the BOOM Sailing programme on the lake. We
will need to have at least 10 kids signed up by January 1 if we are to attempt a
booking. More details will be in the fall newsletter.
Roads
Work will be done on North Kennisis Drive this fall in the
area around Bone Creek. Some blasting will be done to improve that area.
Patching will continue. Next year there are plans to do more paving on Watt’s
Trail, subject to funds being available.
Regatta
Another successful regatta was held. Thanks to all
volunteers who made the day a great success.
Rock Bass Tournament
The tournament was a success although the turnout was
small. It was suggested that we need to publicize it more next year.
Fire
The equipment is in good working order. Our “fire
drill” was not encouraging as only three people showed up. Once again we will
try to have our shed moved to a better location.
Kennisis Community Policing
Bill Elliott took over from Suzanne Thivierge, who has
moved from the lake. There were no reported break-ins last winter and to date,
few incidents on the lake. It was noted that the OPP were on the lake 4 times
this summer and that several fines had been levied regarding the new boating
regulations. The KCP will hold its
first meeting of the new season on September 13.
Lake Stewardship
Water testing had been done but the results were not
available at the meeting. Testing for Zebra Mussels and Spiny Water Flea has
also been done but the results are not yet in. Results from both testings will
be in the fall newsletter.
Negotiations are still ongoing with the developers regarding donation of green space area. It was noted that we had raised strong concern over the treatment of the “Soap Pond/Lagoon” area and that we were working with the developer to correct the situation.
Members were concerned about further development. It was moved that we investigate the possibility of an environmental assessment to determine the effect of future development on the lake. Blair Johnson will investigate this. Dave Mills will attend a council meeting to express our concerns.
County 911 – Naming of Roads
All roads that access a minimum of three dwellings must be
named. Associations have the opportunity to offer names. If not, these roads
will be assigned a name.
Bill Elliott and Dave Mills had traveled around the lake and had identified several roads which were not accounted for on County maps.
It was noted that naming roads was a complicated process and also time-consuming.
It was agreed that we would submit name proposals to this date and that thereafter it would be left up to the County.
Executive 2000-2001
Two members of the current executive announced their
intention to step down.
John Cooke has served as second vice-president and wishes to step down. He did offer to continue to help with the regatta. Thanks, John, for your efforts.
Betty Mills had previously announced that, after 5 years, it was time for her to take a break. Betty had inherited an excellent set of financial records from Bob Purdy and had taken it one step further by computerizing all our transactions. Thanks, Betty, for all your hard work and dedication.
Duncan McCallum had already expressed an interest in becoming the treasurer. Duncan, along with Duncan Kent, had audited the books this year.
Brenda Philp volunteered to join the executive to fill John Cooke’s spot.
Therefore, the following slate of officers were presented and elected.

It was noted that both Blair Johnston and Dave Mills will remain to see the development issue to its final resolution and that after that, would be stepping down.
The executive will meet next on Saturday October 7.
Web Site
It was again announced that our web site was up and
running. Thanks to Lawrence Petrow for helping with this project. The fall
newsletter will offer members the chance to receive their future newsletters via
our website rather than snail mail. This could be a cost-saving move. We will be
looking at establishing links to F.O.C.A. as well as The Haliburton Echo and
The
Minden Times.
Landfill Site
The passing of Dwayne Hayes’ wife was noted and that the
generosity of the residents on the lake was a great help in his time of need.
The Association also contributed.
Concern was also raised over the number of times garbage was being left piled at the gates after hours. Most of the problem lies with people who rent and seem to care little about the lake. Peter Schlieffenbaum noted after the meeting that trespassing has become a major problem for him and that renters are the prime offenders. A joint submission will be in the fall newsletter. Also Dave Mills will ask council to be more proactive in helping to resolve to problem.
Donations
In keeping with our policy of not donating until a clear
financial picture is available, the following donations were approved:
- $300.00 to the Haliburton O.P.P. Detachment to purchase a CD-ROM burner in support of their digital camera. Bill Elliott has presented the cheque.
- $500.00 to the Haliburton Highlands Health Services Foundation. The cheque was presented at the meeting.
Additionally, Greg McGowan, who won the battleship golf event at the regatta, donated his winnings to the hospital and that presentation was made at the meeting.
KENNISIS COMMUNITY POLICING
The volunteers met on September 13 and reviewed what had
happened over the last year. They were encouraged that their efforts had helped
to almost eliminate break-ins. They were also aware that they needed to remain
vigilant. Once again they will be the eyes and ears of the O.P.P. and will be
monitoring the lake in the off-season
The executive of this group are:
Chairman -
Bill Elliott
Secretary
- Marianne Howard
Treasurer
- Maggie Parker
The next meeting will be November 15.
Concern was raised over the proposed provincial legislation which we feel will proliferate the number of ATV’s and dirt bikes on cottage roads. This, currently, is a problem. Council will be asked to state their position on this subject.
