PRESIDENT'S COMMENTS
Welcome to another busy summer season on Kennisis. Before you know it, spring will have brought back the beautiful greenery and our seasonal residents will be back in full force. The winter season on
Kennisis was surely mixed, not great for snowmobiling but we were certainly blessed with no break-ins. As we prepare for another season of fun in the sun, please take the time to review the information in this newsletter carefully. We include a lot of detail so that we can save time at our general meetings. Your executive continues to work hard to make sure that the association's interests are protected and we rely heavily on your support and input. Your attendance at our two general meetings is extremely important to us. Please make an effort to be there and be counted.
I especially want to draw your attention to the articles on membership and lake development. Our efforts to increase and maintain our membership have proved successful and we want to continue that trend. As you may or may not have heard, development of the lots between cat bay and the dam will be going ahead this spring. We knew that this development would be inevitable and we have been working hard to make certain that the interests of the lake have been protected as much as possible.
I have included a separate sheet which contains information on summer activities and the people you can contact in order to gather additional information. Please keep it handy.
See you on May 20!
We extend a hearty welcome to anyone who is new to the Kennisis community. We hope that you will enjoy every good thing that the community has to offer. You will find the residents to be inviting and helpful. If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask.
If you are renting your cottage to others please make sure they are aware of safe, courteous and responsible practices.
MEMBERSHIP FEES:
At our last general meeting, a motion was passed making our association dues a straight $20 for the current year. This will allow us to maintain our current level of service without having to touch our savings. It is important that you pay your dues as soon as you receive your membership renewal, which is included in this package. The bulk of our expenses occur between may and August so that is when we need to have our financial resources available. Remember that in order to vote at meetings, hold office or participate in events, you must be a paid-up member of the KLCOA.
INCREASED MEMBERSHIP:
We are always trying to include as many of our lake residents as possible. We supply our local real estate agents with information packages which are distributed to new purchasers. At the direction of the membership, we are producing a list which will contain the following information: - owners' surname, sequential lot address and the year in which the last membership was paid. This list will be posted at the marina and each executive member will have one. It is hoped that members will check the list to look for errors and to encourage non-members who might be neighbours to join. Additional membership forms will be available at the marina store. Please note that it continues to be our policy not to release a full membership list to anyone.
MAILING LIST / MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION:
Keeping up-to-date is a continuing challenge. Occasionally we make errors (oh, no-I thought I was perfect) but considering our list contains over 700 people, we're as accurate as we've ever been. Here's how you can help:
1. Include your residential address and telephone. In this way we can contact you in the event of an emergency.
2. If you move, send us your change of address.
3. If you sell the cottage, inform us of the new owners.
SPECIAL INFORMATION:
Membership decals are included in this package. If not, please contact Earla Hume, who also has KLCOA signs.
The KLCOA does not issue dump passes. These are sent out by the municipality and if you require one, please contact them.
LAKE DEVELOPMENT
As you may or may not be aware, lots from Cat Bay to the dam have been approved
for development for some time. Through the efforts of our lake steward, Blair
Johnson, we have been monitoring plans which will see these lots sold commencing
this year. Our thrust has been to work with the owner/developer to have certain
sections set aside as green space areas. To this date the response has been
positive and we continue to work in that direction. If we are successful, such
areas would be placed in a land trust.
It is normally our practice not to place advertisements in our newsletter. However, we have included an ad from Gary Vasey which explains in more detail what is happening with this new development, so that you may be better informed, and possibly take advantage of the new lots. The association will continue to monitor new development on the lake.
Many thanks, Blair, for your continued efforts in this regard.
NEWS FROM F.O.C.A.
LAND TRUST:
Many thanks to F.O.C.A. for their assistance in providing information concerning
land trusts as we monitor development on the lake.
MARINE ENGINE EMISSIONS:
Jim Hunt, one of our residents, brought this issue to our attention last fall
and FOCA has been making representations to Federal Environment Minister David
Anderson. Conventional two-stroke marine engines are a major source of water,
air and noise pollution. It is reported that in seven hours of use, a
conventional two-stroke engine produces the same amount of hydrocarbons and
nitrogen oxides as a 1998 passenger car driven 100,000 miles.
SEPTIC TESTING:
If you're at all concerned about the effectiveness of your septic system, there
is a kit available now which includes inspection steps, colourful diagrams,
shoreline friendly tips, dye testing capsule and a long septic life practice
guide. The kit costs $8.95 +gst +pst +shipping and can be obtained by calling or
writing: SEPTIC TEST, UNIT-11-348 Worthington Street East, North Bay, ON. P1B
1H3 705-476-3998. F.O.C.A. is currently designing a document which local
associations can use to help local municipalities develop a re-inspection
programme.
OTHER ISSUES OF NOTE:
Two copies the current F.O.C.A. report are available for viewing. Topics include;
permits to take water, air quality, hunting in wilderness parks, household
hazardous waste, Dombind, roads, taxation, municipal election, official
planning, boating-aids to navigation, cottage watch, insurance. The year of the
septic system, shell environment fund, lake stewardship planning, shoreline
ambassador program, Zebra Mussel monitoring, Great Ontario Dip-in. These reports
will be available at our meeting and after that will be placed at our display at
the marina store.
NEWS FROM THE MINISTRY OF NATURAL RESOURCES
INVADING SPECIES
Last fall I attended the Haliburton Highlands Stewardship meeting at which time
we were presented with information on invading species (e.g. Zebra Mussels,
Spiny Water Flea). If you think we are exempt from this kind of invasion - think
again. There is evidence that these species exist in some of our neighbouring
lakes. They are introduced through the transportation of boats from one waterway
to another. So if you are having visitors or if you are renting your cottage, do
whatever you can to insure that they take the necessary precautions. Brochures
on this topic will be available at our meeting.
BURNING
Please be aware that fire regulations have been in effect since April 1 - no
burning between 2 hours after sunrise and 2 hours before sunset. Fires must be
attended at all times.
KENNISIS COMMUNITY POLICING
Great news!! As of the time of this writing, we have no reports of any break-ins
in the community this winter season. We hope that the reasons for this are the
continued efforts of our volunteers along with the steady work of our O.P.P.
partners. As more and more people decide to live permanently in our beautiful
community, the chances of increased surveillance multiply. Many thanks to
Suzanne Thivierge and her committee.
On a sadder note, we report that Suzanne and Jerry have sold their home and will be moving from the lake. Whereas we are sorry to see them leave, we can wish them only the best in the future. They have been a vital part of this community and will be missed. Suzanne has worked tirelessly for community policing and for all her efforts we say, thanks, Suzanne!!
I have asked Bill Elliott to assume responsibility for community policing until our meeting in September, at which time it will be necessary to elect another chair. Bill has expressed an interest in running for this position but, of course, we always welcome other nominations.
ROADS REPORT
Fred Musinka was unavailable at the time this bulletin was put together so we
called the roads department to see what plans they had for our area. Last fall
the south shore was brushed and was also ditched from about lot 120 to lot 167.
In addition some culvert work and prep work was done so that resurfacing could
be done this year. They hope to do the resurfacing in June. In the meantime,
anyone coming down the south shore should proceed with caution as
naturally-forming speed bumps are in evidence. The roads department say they
will fill in the holes when the frost is out.
The roads department hope to do some ditching and prep work this year on the
north shore and, if any brushing is done, it will be around little Kennisis. I'm
sure that Fred will have more details for us in time for our may meeting.
WHAT PRICE ADVERTISING
From time to time we are asked by area businesses to place advertisements in our
newsletter. We have avoided doing this because it makes our information package
too unwieldy and we have been able to cover our costs through membership dues.
We support the marina and the forest because of their generosity in providing
facilities for our use. Shopping locally as opposed to buying it elsewhere is a
personal choice. However, the mild weather has had serious negative effects upon
some area businesses and I would encourage you to shop locally whenever
possible. Thanks for taking the time to consider this.
ON THE WATERFRONT
BOOM SAILING
The Ontario Sailing Association cannot provide a date for us to host this event
this year. There is a lot of interest, provincially, in this programme and early
commitment is necessary to secure and confirm a date. However, if we have enough
confirmed interest by September, we will book the week of August 20, 2001. The
cost is $130.00 for the week and the programme is open to children 7 through to
13 years old.
Editor's Note: Pete works tirelessly to provide sailing experiences for people on the lake. Lately he has seen support for sailing events dwindle. Please consider helping Pete revitalize our sailing programme. If you are at all interested in bringing BOOM Sailing back to Kennisis, please give Pete a call at your earliest convenience.
SWIMMING: - Earla Hume
Once again we will be offering the Red Cross Swimming Programme. The number of
courses and their duration will depend on the number of children interested so
it is important to register as soon as forms are available. Courses will be run
between July 10 and August 18. More detailed information will be available at
our general meeting and notices will be posted at the marina and the marina
store.
ROCK BASS TOURNAMENT - Keith Rodd
This event was a huge success last year and once again we'll be holding it
during the Ontario Family Fishing Weekend. The tournament will be held on
Saturday July 8 with Sunday July 9 reserved as a rain date. More details will be
given at our general meeting and notices will be posted.
BOAT SAFETY COURSE
Gail Goldenberg has arranged for ray woodward to conduct a boat safety course at
the Haliburton Forest on Saturday May 27. The cost is $55.00 per person and is
open for people aged 8 years and older. The day will go from 9:00 a.m. ‘Till
4:30 p.m. with 1/2 hour for lunch. Tests, geared to the appropriate age level
will be conducted. Successful participants will earn their operator's card. We
can accommodate a maximum of 80 people. To register, send a cheque made out to
R&J Marketing to Gail Goldenberg at Box 286, R.R. 1, Haliburton, K0M 1S0.
Registrants will be numbered in the order in which they are received. Thanks
Gail!
